DUVALL SANDBLAST FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS
July 16 & 17, 2016
Presented by Duvall Foundation for the Arts (DFA), SandBlast Festival of the Arts has been a staple in the community for over two decades. On July 16 and 17 there will be fine arts, live music and sand sculpting along the shores of the beautiful and historic Snoqualmie River at McCormick Park (26200 NE Stephens St, Duvall).
This free, family friendly event features a professional and community inspired sand sculpture created live during the festival led by Kali Bradford, internationally known sand sculptor and multi-media artist. Watch the progression of the sand sculpture as you sip on wine, listen to live music, shop local artist booths, and enjoy the beautiful river.
Bradford’s career has spanned more than 30 years, during which she has traveled the world creating scalable and detailed sand sculptures, ranging from diminutive three-foot displays to a sky-reaching 64-foot architectural installation. She’s sculpted sand in China, Australia, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and India as well as throughout the United States. Bradford is a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) recipient, and has been granted awards on nine separate occasions in California, and on two occasions in Washington, as an artist-in-residence. These days, in addition to leading workshops across the country, and exhibiting locally, Bradford continues to substitute for the Sequim Unified School District for all ages and most subjects. “I’ve been subbing for more than 40 years as it accommodates traveling as a sand artist,” she said. See Bradford’s art at sandart.tumblr.com.
‘Kia Kaha’ – meaning Stay Strong, is this year’s SandBlast theme. Inspired by our dear friend and SandBlast committee member, Brian Pattinson who passed away February 10, 2016. Daniel Cautrell, the event’s Art Director who creates the event logo each year said, “This design was inspired by the Pattinson family saying: Kia Kaha, or Stay Strong. A reference to the late Brian Pattinson who was an ardent supporter of Sandblast and who was from New Zealand. I researched some of the tribal Maori art of New Zealand and developed the design from that. When considering “strength” and the Valley, the Snoqualmie River comes to mind. There are Native stories of ancient spirits that inhabit and guard areas along the River.” The title of this print is River Watcher. Dan’s work will be on display and available for purchase at the event along with many other local artists.
All ages are welcome to pick up a shovel and help create the sand sculpture! Stroll through or bring your beach chairs and bathing suit and stay all day!
